Description

ATWORTH BATH ROAD ST 86 NE (south side) 2/14 The Clock Tower GV II

Clock tower. 1887, in commemoration of Victoria's Golden Jubilee and also war memorial. Rock-faced limestone with ashlar dressings, stone slate gabled roof. Two-stage. Square lower stage; Maltese cross on west side with relief-carved profile of Victoria and dates of reign, Second World War plaque below. First World War memorial with segmental pediment on north side. Tablet on east side records erection of tower in 1887. Chamfered pointed doorway on south side; planked door with ornamental hinges. Offset bellcote has chamfered round-arched openings on all sides. Clockface on east and west sides. Weathervane with VR. Cost was raised by subscription, the main contributor was Mr Fuller of Neston Park (q.v.).
