Description

Clockhouse Cottage is a turnpike toll house that has been converted into a dwelling. It dates from the late 18th century and was extended and altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed of roughcast brick and features a steeply pitched tiled roof. Originally comprising two bays, it has been extended by one bay to the left. The cottage is two storeys high, with an entrance on the right that has a plank door. The windows are two-light small pane casements that are slightly recessed and have segmental heads. The right-hand window on the first floor has an iron bracket for the left light, which may relate to its original function as a tollgate. Next to this window is a clock set in a round chamfered opening, topped with a bracketed hood. The eaves are cogged brick, and there is a parapet at the right gable end along with an internal stack. The original stack at the left end now adjoins the added left bay, which has a slightly higher ridge. The left end features a ground floor bow window and a first floor two-light casement. Attached to the right is a low, one-storey weatherboarded outbuilding with a steeply pitched roof, and a further lower outbuilding to the far right that includes a stack. There are lean-to outshuts at the rear. The house is positioned at an angle to provide a view of the road as it approaches Barkway. It is listed for its historical interest.
