Description

Barkway Cottage is a house that was once three or more dwellings, dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It has been extended and altered in the 19th and mid-20th centuries. The building features a timber frame that is rendered, topped with a steeply pitched thatched roof. Originally consisting of three bays, it has been extended to the left in two phases, now totaling seven bays. The cottage is one storey with an attic.

The entrance is now located at the center of the first added bay, featuring a plank and muntin door with a tiled gabled hood. Flanking this entrance are flush frame three-light horizontal sliding sashes. To the right, there is a smaller horizontal sliding sash and a 20th-century four-light flat-headed projecting bay window. On the left, there is a recessed two-light small pane casement and another horizontal sliding sash. The cottage has two dormers with eyebrow thatching, and one on the left has a tiled gabled head.

Ridge stacks are positioned at the center of the original bays and between the two added sections, with an external stack at the left end. The right end features French windows and an attic casement. The rear includes a mix of casements and horizontal sliding sashes, along with small outshut additions. Inside, there are some exposed framing elements, including curved passing tension braces, jowled posts, and a reset stop-chamfered bearer.
