Description

Berg Cottage is a house that was once three or more dwellings, dating from the late 17th century. It was restored between 1935 and 1938 for Mrs. Berg and again around 1960 by W. Weir for the National Trust. The building features a timber frame on a brick base and is covered in roughcast. It has a steeply pitched thatched roof and consists of five bays with a lobby entry, a rear outshut, and one bay of gable end additions.

The house is two storeys tall with some one-storey additions. On the ground floor, the plinth is higher and steps down to the left, leading up to two plank doors, one of which is blocked. The doors have simple architraves and are topped by a hipped tiled hood supported by carved brackets. There are three light leaded flush frame casements, with the one to the left of the entrances canted out on brackets, and hoodboards to the right featuring two light flush frame timber glazing bar casements in the right bay and addition.

On the first floor, there is a central two light lattice casement with the date 1687 above it and a Sun Fire Insurance Marker below. To the right, there is a small pane horizontal sliding sash, while elsewhere there are three light lattice casements. The house has a central cross axial ridge stack, and the one bay additions have separate lower gables. The right end of the ground floor features weatherboarding, small casements, and exposed plates and purlins. The left end is also weatherboarded and has an attic casement. At the rear, there is a catslide roof that extends to near ground level over a continuous lean-to outshut, with two dormers that have tiles below their sills. The right bay addition has a stack and pantiles on the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
