Description
Tollgate House is a cottage built around 1830, with some later alterations. It features painted rendered brickwork and a low-pitched hipped roof, with an end stack on the right. The front is low and two-storey, with two windows that have casements designed to look like glazing bar sashes, complete with wedged heads. The building is set back to the right, with a first-floor window at the end and a ground-floor window grouped in the center alongside the entrance, which has a part-glazed 20th-century door. This entrance is positioned against the toll bay, which is an octagonal structure that fits into the angle of the building, showing five sides and having windows that face diagonally onto Tean Road. The turnpike roads leading into Cheadle were improved around 1830, coinciding with the construction of this cottage and several public houses from that period, such as The Swan Inn.
