Description

Mill House is a farmhouse dated 1635, with minor alterations from the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed dressed and squared Hollington red sandstone of ashlar quality, featuring white sandstone dressings. The roof is tiled with a moulded naive Baroque eaves band, and there are verge parapets on corbelled kneelers, pitched copings, and ball finials at the apices. A massive central cruciform-shaped ridge stack made of brick sits on a stone base. The building has a T-shaped lobby-entry plan and consists of two storeys with a gable-lit attic. The front has a symmetrical layout with three windows, featuring five light mullion and transom windows, with deeper ground-floor windows. A 3-light mullioned window is framed above a single-storey gabled porch, which has a string at kneeler level suggesting a pediment. The lintel over the entrance is inscribed 'ANO 1635', and the substantial boarded door, set back on the face of the house, is a 17th-century feature with strap hinges. To the left, there is a lower set-back wing with a 3-light mullioned gabled dormer and two widely spaced 2-light mullioned windows on the ground floor, along with a circular shafted end stack. The right gable has a range of 4-light labelled mullioned windows on the attic, first, and ground floors, with a similar range on the rear wing. Inside, there is a 17th-century panelled parlour to the right of the entrance, featuring two contemporary panelled doors, and a ceiling with two chamfered main beams that have stepped run-out stops and chamfered joists. The room to the left of the entrance has chamfered beams and a partially blocked fireplace. A small stair hall at the rear of the stack provides access to both front rooms, the staircase, and the rear wing.
