Description

Nos 148-152 on Mill Street is a farmhouse that has been divided, dating from the late 15th to early 16th century. Originally designed as a Wealden hall, it features an inserted central jetty. The building has a random rubble plinth and exposed timber framing on the south side, with a continuous jetty supported by joists and brackets, and curved wind-braces on the first floor. The central jetty is now blocked, but there is evidence of a recess on the left and in the eaves formation. The ground floor is brick on both the left and right sides, while the first floor has exposed framing with plaster infill. The roof is hipped and covered with plain tiles, with the main stack located off-centre to the left, and an off-ridge stack at the front, along with a right end stack that has a projecting breast. The building has two storeys and three windows of mixed styles, with an irregular arrangement. There is a very small casement window on the first floor, two windows in from the left, and a glazing bar sash on the ground floor to the left, which has 18th-century shutters. There are three boarded doors: one at the extreme left, one to the right of the right-hand window, and one in its original position at the left-hand side of the recess. There are 20th-century extensions at the rear and right-hand side.
