Description
Nos 256 and 257 on Church Road is a farmhouse that later became a row of cottages and is now two dwellings. It dates from the 17th century, was altered in the 18th century, and extended in the early 20th century. The building is timber-framed with banded brick and flint infilling, while the ground floor features 18th-century brickwork. It has a thatched roof and is a single storey with an attic, originally comprising four bays and extended to the southwest by a fifth bay in the 20th century. There are half-glazed doors in the third bay from the east and opposite the main stack, with a thatched pent roof over the entrances and seven steps leading up from road level. The framing is visible only on the upper floor and includes heavy corner braces. The windows are timber with panes, and the doors from the former 18th-century cottages have been blocked, with ground floor windows altered. The roof is hipped, featuring three flush dormers, a central brick stack, and single flue stacks added to each rebuilt gable end. The interior has not been seen but is said to have moulded ceiling beams and open fireplaces, which are currently blocked.
