Description

This is a paper mill, constructed in the 18th century with an addition dating to around 1900. It was built in two distinct phases, the earlier section located at the rear of the site. The rear section has a ground floor of red brick with grey brick headers, while the upper two floors are clad in weatherboarding. The left-hand side features a two-window elevation with glazing bar sash windows and two industrial doors below. The right-hand side has only the upper storey weather-boarded, with a single glazing bar sash window. A mill wheel is present. The interior is supported by square wooden supports. The front portion of the mill is built of red brick with a slate roof, notable for its four pilasters extending through all floors. It has two metal-framed, cambered windows, each with a cambered brick head, and a tall, central weather-boarded lucarne (a dormer window) featuring two round windows and curved wooden bargeboards. Three industrial doors are also present. A weather-boarded belvedere sits atop the roof, and the left side of the front section has eight windows, mirroring the lucarne on the central structure. A three-storey matching extension has been added to the right side. Michael T Fullan's 1980 publication, The Watermills of the East Malling and Wateringbury Streams, details the mill’s history.
