Description

1 and 3 Swan Street is a shop that dates back to the late medieval period. It has been underbuilt and refronted, with a mansard roof added in the early 19th century. The exterior features a ground floor made of painted brick and a stuccoed first floor that has incised lines to imitate masonry. There is a stuccoed plinth and a slate mansard roof. The building has two storeys and attics, with three windows. The attic storey contains three casement windows, while the first floor has three 16-pane sash windows and an additional sash window facing High Street. The Swan Street elevation includes three plain shopfronts with wooden pilasters, brackets, and a large fascia. The High Street elevation has two similar shopfronts and a now-blocked four-panelled door. Inside, the building features dragon beams, indicating it was once jettied, and door heads on the first floor. Historical deeds reveal ownership dating back to around 1620, with notable past owners including two Grooms to the Bedchamber of Charles II and Judge Twisden, who tried the regicides.
