Description
49 and 51 High Street is a shop and house that dates back to the late medieval period, originally built as a hall-house and later refronted in the mid 19th century. The building is timber-framed, with its exterior covered in roughcast and a stuccoed plinth. It features a tiled roof with one brick chimney stack. The structure has two storeys and attics, with three windows. The attic includes three hipped dormers, while the first floor has three mid 19th-century sash windows with marginal glazing and moulded architraves, along with a moulded cornice. The shopfront, which is of 20th-century design, has two bow windows on the right side. Notably, embedded in the base of the right-hand side of the shopfront is the medieval market cross of the town, depicting a saint (or Christ) with an arm raised in benediction. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain an excellent moulded crown post, massive timbering, early doors, and a 16th-century turned oak staircase.
