Description
27 High Town is a shop and dwelling with medieval origins, dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, and features elements from the late 18th century along with 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of painted brick and has a plain tile roof with a 20th-century brick end stack. It stands four storeys high and has a three-window range, featuring six-over-six sash windows with old glass, set under gauged brick flat arches on the first and second floors. Above these are three-over-three sashes, with the center window blocked, and a 20th-century restored parapet. The shop front was also updated in the 20th century.
Inside, the building contains extensive remains of timber-framing from the 16th and 17th centuries, suggesting possible medieval origins. The basement features well-cut stonework and a medieval corbel. A stair wall leading from the ground to the first floor showcases a 17th-century wall painting, while a room on the second floor contains re-set linenfold panelling from the early 16th century. Various rooms on the second and third floors include reused panelling dating from around 1600.
