Description

54A, 56, and 58 High Street are two shops with living accommodation above, dating back to before 1500, with a refronting from around 1840. The front elevation is weatherboarded and features a tiled roof. The building has two storeys with four windows and consists of two parallel ranges. It has a moulded eaves cornice and four widely spaced sash windows with marginal glazing and panels below. The shopfront is distinctive, featuring six pilastered Corinthian columns and two shopfronts with round-headed arches decorated with Prince of Wales feathers. The side elevation is tile-hung, while the rear elevation includes a projecting gable with collar beams and through purlins.

Inside, the first floor reveals a four-bay timber-framed range facing the High Street, along with one large bay framed separately at the back. There are internal mullioned windows and a daub wall. The structure includes four plain square crown posts with two head braces supporting the collar beam and dragon ties. The roof is a sans-purlin type with a collar beam. One upright post features a chamfer and lamb's tongue step, resembling that of No 65 High Street, and the upright posts have deep jowls. One collar beam has a chamfer and run-out stop. It is suggested that this building may have originally served as a Cart or Market hall, and the large framed bay at the rear could be part of the earlier structure.
