Description

Avicia Cottage is a late medieval timber-framed building, significantly altered in the early 19th century and refenestrated in the 20th century. The external walls are roughcast, and the roof is tiled. A section of the front is clad in weatherboarding. The cottage has two storeys and three windows. The first floor has three 20th-century casement windows, some with leaded lights, and the ground floor has three similar casements. A doorcase with a flat hood and brackets shelters a plank door. A plinth runs along the base of the building. The rear elevation features a projecting gable with exposed tension braces, a mullioned window, and an early 19th-century fixed casement.

The interior reportedly contains a fine moulded crownpost with beam moulding. A notable feature is an unusual plate beam fronting the road, now covered externally, displaying concave moulding and decoration over approximately 2 feet in width. An internal supporting beam, believed to have been part of the former solar, shows castellated and decorative mouldings. A large inglenook fireplace, 9 feet wide, is flanked by stone mouldings, potentially of ecclesiastical origin. The inglenook, constructed of ashlar and 2-inch bricks, is likely from the early 16th century and was inserted during a Tudor modernization that included the installation of ceilings. An original well is located at the rear of the property.
