Description

These oasthouses and an attached cart shed date from the early to mid-19th century. They are located at Broadwater Farm, East Malling. The oasthouses consist of two parallel ranges built of red brick in Flemish bond, with grey brick headers. The front range has a hipped roof with three cambered casements on the first floor and three cambered doorcases. The rear range is half-hipped towards the road, incorporating two blocked pointed arches on the first floor and a central loading door secured with cross-shaped iron ties. The farmyard side features cambered casements and what was originally a cambered cart entrance, now converted to a sliding door.

The southernmost roundel likely dates from the early 19th century and is built in Flemish bond with a tiled roof, cowl, and fantail. The next roundel north is of stock brick in a Sussex bond, also with a tiled roof, cowl and fantail. The remaining three kilns are further north; two have bases of Kentish ragstone with galleting, with stock brick above, and the third is entirely of stock brick. All have tiled roofs with cowls and fantails.

An early 20th-century two-story wooden platform extends to the north, connecting to a mid-19th century, four-bay open-fronted cart shed. The cart shed has a queen post roof, a red brick rear with pilasters, and missing roof tiles. The interiors of the oasthouses retain drying racks and hop presses.
