Description
Nos. 1 to 19 inclusive, with railed areas, is a terrace row built around 1842 by William Saxby. The buildings are rendered and feature plain tiled roofs. The terrace has a segmental plan and consists of two storeys, an attic, and a basement. Architectural details include a cill band, a projecting cornice, and a parapet at the roof, with stacks positioned to the left and right of each house unit. Each unit has a flat-roofed dormer, although Nos. 3 and 13 feature large, out-of-scale 20th-century dormers.
Each of the 19 house units has a large full-height bow. Nos. 1 to 6 have two glazing bar sashes on each floor, while Nos. 7 to 19 have one tripartite glazing bar sash per floor, with the glazing bars missing from No. 12. Panelled doors are located to the right of each bow, accompanied by semi-circular fanlights and double rebated surrounds, with flights of steps leading up to them. The basements have a variety of doors, and the areas in front of Nos. 1 to 6 are partly covered. Spearhead railings are present on the steps, in the areas, and around the small forecourt at No. 1. William Saxby, who built these houses, was also the builder of Vale Square and may have designed them himself.
