Numbers 1-12 with Railings

This is a terrace of twelve houses located in Weymouth, built around 1835. The houses are constructed with brickwork, rendered on most elevations except for numbers 7 to 10, and have slate roofs. They are arranged over three storeys, with an attic and basement.

Architecturally, the houses are of modest depth, generally featuring a dog-leg staircase to the rear and a small gabled service wing. Each house has a single flat-roofed dormer with a 12-pane sash window. Most have a slight bowed oriel window with an 8:12:8-pane sash, dentil cornices, and a flat roof. House number 1 has a three-storey oriel that rises above the cornice line, with a higher parapet, while number 5 has a three-storey oriel stopped to the cornice line. Basement windows are 16-pane sashes. Arched doorways with plain fanlights, reeded transoms, and six-panel doors (number 2 has a two-panel door) are positioned to the right of each house, except number 1. Continuous plat bands run at first and second-floor levels, topped by a moulded cornice, blocking course, and coped parapet. Spearhead railings return to the doorways, with a gate leading to stone steps to the basement areas except for numbers 11 and 12. Eleven ridge stacks are visible, with those at numbers 1 and 2 being doubled in size.

The return elevation to Lennox Street is four windows wide, under a broad flat-topped pediment covering the double roof to a central valley. This section features a central arched sash window at three levels, flanked by blind openings and a 12-pane sash to the right, with a continuous cornice below the attic light. A projecting flat-roofed portico covers the doorway and has a large arched sash window with radial bars to the south; the approach to the door is on a walkway supported by square pillars, with a small basement light set back below. The return elevation to William Street has a plain gable with a single sash window at first-floor level. The rear elevations, also rendered, are largely unaltered, featuring original dormers, 16-pane sashes, and a tall, thin 18-pane sash stair window. Each house retains the small two-storey gabled service wing. House number 1 also features a bowed oriel at first-floor level.

The interiors of numbers 9 and 8 demonstrate original features, including reeded doorcases in number 9, an open lobby with an arch to a dog-leg staircase, stick balusters, a swept mahogany handrail on Doric newels, reeded flat cornices, simple fireplace surrounds, panelled oriel reveals, and original staircases. The original doors with architraves remain in these houses. The terrace exemplifies the high quality of speculative development in Weymouth during this period and remains practically unaltered externally.
