Description
12 and 13 Brunswick Terrace are a pair of houses built between 1823 and 1827 by Morris Clarke and George Cox. They are rendered with a slate roof and form part of a terrace that originally included 20 houses. This pair is slightly taller and set forward compared to the neighboring houses.
The buildings are three storeys high with an attic. Number 12 features a flat-roofed dormer above two 12-pane sash windows on the first floor and a two-storey bow window with an 8:12:8-pane sash arrangement. Number 13 has a Victorian gabled dormer above a two-storey bow window, with plain lower sashes and a canted bay on the second floor, which has plain sashes and a blind window to its left. Each house has an arched doorway with plain reveals and a plain fanlight above a reeded transom leading to panelled doors. There are plain bands above the ground and first floors, a slight moulded cornice, a blocking course, and a parapet. Each house has a deep brick stack on the right party wall.
The rear of the houses is in brick, featuring paired brick 'dentils' on the cornice. Number 12 has a small flat-roofed dormer, 12-pane sashes, and a single-storey gabled rendered wing extending back to the road. Number 13 includes a Victorian gabled dormer with plain sashes, a shallow two-storey brick gabled wing, and a broad gabled garage extension. The interiors have not been inspected. These houses are part of the last formal terraces at the northern end of the Esplanade, contributing to the overall character of Brunswick Terrace.
