Description
The Queen Victoria Statue, located on Dorchester Road in Weymouth, is a commemorative statue erected in 1902. It stands approximately 5 meters high overall and features a life-size bronze figure of Queen Victoria atop a Portland stone podium that measures about 2 meters square. The statue faces south along the Esplanade, with its back to the Church of St John.
The square plinth is weathered and has a moulded capping above four decorative panels, resting on a moulded base that consists of two offset square stages and a weathered two-stage platform. The south side of the plinth is inscribed with "VICTORIA. D.G. BRITANNIAR REGINA. FID DEF INDIAE IMP." On the north side, there is a panel that reads: "This memorial erected by public subscription was opened by HRH Princess Beatrice (Princess Henry of Battenberg) October 20th 1902. John Bragg Mayor, Richard Nicholas Howard, Town Clerk." The east face features a carved Arms of the Borough of Melcombe Regis, while the northwest side displays the Royal Arms. The statue is well-positioned at the northern entry to the town, although it is less favourably placed compared to the King's Statue at the southern end of the Esplanade. No sculptor's name is recorded.
