Description

24 Effingham Street is a late 18th-century terraced town house that has origins dating back to the 17th century or earlier. The building features mixed-stock brick in Flemish bond and a slate-tiled roof. It consists of three storeys and a basement, with an internal chimney stack located to the left of centre. The house is set back behind the adjoining Number 26 and projects in front of Number 22.

The east-facing road front is three bays wide, largely symmetrical, and exhibits Georgian architectural style. The ground-floor brickwork is painted white. The entrance is located on the north side and features a moulded door case complete with a frieze, cornice, and pilasters that have fluted capitals. The timber door consists of six raised and fielded panels, two of which are glazed. This door is recessed within the door case, which has moulded panels on either side and a round-headed fanlight above. Additionally, the door case includes a fitted brass bell-pull. The ground floor has two sash windows, while the first and second storeys each have three sash windows. All windows are recessed and consist of four-over-three panes, set beneath flat, red-brick gauged arches.

The rear walls of the building incorporate remnants of a 17th-century or earlier structure, constructed of flint and brick, featuring an arched window opening. Inside, there are framed partitions, and the drawing room includes arched recesses flanking a 20th-century fireplace. The staircase is adorned with turned principal balusters and a dado rail. The basement ceiling features a chamfered beam, which may have been reused or could date from an earlier phase of construction.
