Description

This is a terrace row of four houses, numbers 38, 40, 42, and 44, dating from the 1840s, located on Bellevue Road, Ramsgate. The building is constructed of stock brick with a slate roof. It is three storeys high with a basement, with cill bands and a cornice that steps up towards number 44. Each house unit originally had two glazing bar sashes on the second floor (though those in number 40 have been replaced). There are eight bays in total. The first floor features shallow bows with mullions and transoms, and these are sheltered by tented verandahs with latticed valancing, simple piers, and heart and honeysuckle rails. The ground floor bows are characterised by Ionic pilasters and star traceried upper lights. The front doors are made of six moulded panels, flanked by fluted Doric quarter columns, and are approached by flights of three steps. Basement windows are fitted with glazing bar sashes. The front areas are enclosed by spearhead railings. The terrace shares a design style with the terrace rows in Augusta Road, and is intended as a visual termination to that grouping.
