Description

The Iron Duke is a public house located on Bellevue Road in Ramsgate. It was built in 1816 and altered in the mid-19th century. The building is rendered and stands three storeys high with a basement on a plinth, featuring a parapet, cornice, and stacks at the rear.

On the second floor, there are two sash windows set in moulded surrounds with vermiculated keystones and cill brackets. The first floor has a sash window to the left, with a canted bay to the right that includes a cornice and a balcony with geometric patterned rails. The ground floor showcases a traditional pub front with plate glass windows and moulded panels below. To the left, there is a small bay with double half-glazed doors, and to the right, a projecting porch with double half-glazed doors, a rectangular fanlight, and arched sidelights. There is a small railed area to the right with ornate fleur-de-lys rails and a large tiered octagonal lamp with a scrolled arching bracket.

The left return features two sash windows on the second floor, a sash and raised sashes on the first floor, and a central half-glazed door on the ground floor with a cornice on consoles. The interior is largely from the 20th century, but it retains a moulded dado rail that is likely original. The public house was first rated as the Prince of Orange in 1816, with its address then listed as 15½ Bellevue Hill, and it was also known as the Bellevue Tavern.
