Description

This is a pair of houses with shops, built in the 1820s in the Plains of Waterloo, Ramsgate. The building is constructed of painted brick, with a slate roof. It has three storeys, a garret, and a basement.

The front elevation features two glazing bar sashes to the left, two blank spaces, and a central casement window on the second floor. A two-storey canted bay window extends to the left, featuring glazing bar sashes on the ground floor within moulded architraves, and French windows on the first floor. A similar canted bay window, with French windows, is present on the right side of the first floor. A continuous tented verandah runs along the first floor, supported by piers with scrolled brackets, and simple iron rails.

A reeded and panelled door with a fanlight is located on the left, and a panelled door to the centre, both within semi-circular surrounds; the right-hand door (number 49) has a Coade stone head with a keystone. Spear-headed iron rails are present to the steps and basement areas. A 20th-century (C20) canted plate glass shop front with a plate glass corner door is situated on the right.

The rear return displays a shaped gable, a paired chimney stack, and a tripartite garret window, echoing the front’s features. There are three blank window spaces on each floor, with the centre window to the second floor being round-headed.
