Description

This is a terrace of six houses, numbers 3 to 13 Spencer Square, built in the 1830s as part of James Townley’s development of the former barracks area, after 1838. The terrace is constructed of stock brick, with some sections painted, and has slate roofs. The buildings are three storeys high with a basement, and feature string courses and a parapet with chimneys arranged from left to right. Each house has two glazing bar sash windows on the second floor, with painted window heads, and two French doors with simple iron railings on the ground floor. There are bow windows on the ground floor, some painted or rendered (particularly at number 6), with glazing bar sash windows and occasional Ionic pilasters. The front doors are located to the right of the bow windows and consist of seven sunk panels with semi-circular fanlights in a gauged semi-circular surround, approached by two moulded steps. Basement level has covered paving openings with glazing bar sashes. There are 20 bays in total.
