Description
This is a terrace house, built around 1816 as part of James Townley’s redevelopment of the Cavalry Barracks site in Ramsgate, and forming part of The Paragon. It is rendered with a slate roof and has four storeys and a basement, topped with a parapet and chimney stacks to the left. The second and third floors feature two sash windows with moulded surrounds. A lead-hooded verandah on the first floor has two French windows with two moulded elliptical arches and simple Gothick traceried rails. A bow window extends across the ground floor and basement; it has two sash windows on the ground floor, each with a hood box, a glazing bar sash to the left, and a half-glazed door and sash window to the right in the basement. A panelled front door is located to the right on the ground floor, featuring a semi-circular fanlight in a moulded surround, and brackets leading to a small balcony with a flight of three moulded marble steps. The roof has spearhead finials and an urn-shaped top. The interior retains simple early 19th-century details, including marble surrounds to painted iron moulded fireplaces. There’s a simple turned baluster dog leg staircase. The principal rooms on the ground and first floors are elliptically shaped with curved doors, including incised Greek key ornament and fine brass key plates and escutcheons. Nos. 4 to 11 of The Paragon demonstrate the original character of the terrace, although it has undergone subsequent alterations.
