Description
The War Memorial in Knockholt was completed in 1923 and is made of stone with a bronze relief. It features a square stone column that is battered at the base, topped with a moulded cornice and a pedimented cap adorned with a laurel wreath. The memorial stands on two stone steps. The panel facing the street displays a bronze relief of a First World War soldier, who is wearing a backpack with a helmet attached, standing in a mourning pose while supporting his rifle. The plinth is inscribed with the words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ LOVING AND EVER GRATEFUL/ REMEMBRANCE OF THE/ MEN OF KNOCKHOLT/ WHO FOUGHT AND DIED/ FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918." The left panel lists the names of those who fell in the First World War, including Major Alexander Malins Lafone VC, while the right panel commemorates those who fell in the Second World War. The rear panel is blank.
