Description

A house, now divided into two cottages (Corner Cottage and Hazel Cottage), dating back to the 16th century, with a later rear wing added subsequently. The house is timber-framed, with a red brick ground floor, a tile-hung first floor, and a plain tile roof. It originally comprised three timber-framed bays, including an open hall with a single-storeyed bay at each end. The building is two storeys high and has a hipped roof with gablets. The front has an irregular arrangement of windows, with various wood and iron-framed casements from the 19th and 20th centuries. A half-glazed 20th-century door provides access to No. 2, situated to the left of the central ground-floor window. A 20th-century addition serves as the entrance to No. 1, located at the left end. A two-storey timber-framed rear wing extends to the rear on the right side and contains a stack. There is also a two-storey 20th-century addition on the left end. The interior features exposed beams and posts, including a plain crown-post. Group value is present, reflecting its contribution to the character of the Bearsted Church Lane area.
