Description
This barn, located about 40 metres northwest of Chainhurst Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century and has undergone some alterations over the years. It is constructed with a timber frame and is weatherboarded, standing on a brick plinth. The right gable end features brick infilling with a herringbone frieze between widely spaced studs beneath a midrail. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has a hipped design with gablets. The barn consists of four timber-framed bays and includes a rear aisle, positioned at right angles to the road. The second bay from the left has full-height double doors, while the left gable end has a pivoting six-pane casement, double doors, and a stable door. Inside, the barn features cut jowls on the principal posts, straight braces to the arcade plate, and a clasped-purlin roof with diminishing principal rafters, which incorporates re-used medieval rafters. The barn is included for its group value.
