Description

Nos 1 and 2 Charlton Lane are a pair of houses built in the late 18th century or early 19th century. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and feature a plain tile roof. The buildings are two storeys high and have a dentilled brick eaves cornice along the shallow-pitched hipped roof. Each house has a regular six-window front, consisting of two three-light casements and a central blind window recess. The windows on both the ground and first floors have segmental heads.

No. 1 has a boarded door with a trellised porch located under the first blind window from the left, while No. 2 has a boarded door under the first blind window from the right. There is a rear lean-to, and to the left of the door to No. 2, there is brickwork that may have been reused, featuring graffiti with the date RW1700.

The interior of No. 2 has only been partly inspected. It includes a central staircase plan, stud partition walls, a chamfered cross-beam in the right ground-floor room, relatively thin joists, and plank doors. The fireplace at the right end has a cambered head with an iron soffit, a brick chimney breast that extends the full width of the gable end wall, and brickwork carved with a raised door key.
