Description
Nos 1 and 2 The Hollow is a pair of houses, believed to have originally been a barn, dating from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The buildings are timber framed and feature tarred weatherboarding, with some sections beaded. The first floor of the left gable end is pebbledashed, and the roof is covered with plain tiles.
No. 2 includes a short bay that contains a stack, along with two timber-framed bays to the right, the rightmost of which is very short. The structure has two storeys and features a jetty with solid-spandrel brackets on the left gable end. The roof is half-hipped on the left and gabled on the right, with a multiple brick ridge stack positioned to the right of the center.
The windows are arranged irregularly, with three casements: none on the left, one three-light slightly to the left of the stack, one single-light under the stack, and one three-light towards the right end. There is also a two-light casement on the first floor of the left gable end. The entrance to No. 1 has a boarded door with a flat hood situated well to the left of the stack, while No. 2 has a boarded door with a flat corniced and bracketed hood located under the stack. A late 18th century or early 19th century rear lean-to is also present.
The interior has only been partly inspected but reveals exposed framing in No. 2, featuring gunstock-jowled posts and short arch-braces to the tie-beams, along with chamfered, arch-braced wall-plates. There is a blocked two-light first-floor window with an ovolo-moulded cill and roll- and cavetto-moulded mullion located at the rear of the bay to the right of the stack.
