Description
44 and 45 Medway Street are two houses built around 1815-1820. They are constructed of Flemish bond brick and feature slate mansard roofs with brick end stacks. Each house has a double-depth plan, three stories, and a basement, with a one-window range. No. 45, on the right, has a semi-circular arch over an early 19th-century six-panelled door, and segmental arches over a late 19th-century four-pane sash window on the ground floor, along with early 19th-century sixteen-pane sashes above. No. 44 features semi-circular arches over a late 19th-century bolection-panelled door and an early 19th-century sash window with glazing bars (though the radiating bars at the head have been removed), as well as gauged brick flat arches over early 19th-century sixteen-pane sashes above. Both houses have a brick and stone-coped parapet, and No. 44 has early 19th-century sashes at the rear.
Inside, No. 45 includes an early 19th-century dog-leg staircase with stick balusters on a closed string. The ground-floor front room features an early 19th-century fireplace adorned with fine Minton tiles from around 1872-1880, and there is a panelled partition leading to the second floor. No. 44 has a similar early 19th-century staircase. Its ground-floor rooms contain an early 19th-century fireplace with sunk roundels, moulded cornices with fascias and roll mouldings, and vertically-sliding panelled shutters set in moulded wood architraves, along with early 19th-century fireplaces and simple cornices on the first and second floors. The interior is particularly notable for its rare vernacular-derived plank and stud partitions with panelled dados, which separate the ground floor rooms from the entrance passage, as well as similar partitions that divide the first and second floor rooms.
