Description
Greycoat Hospital, now a school, was founded as a charitable boarding school in 1698. The central block was built in 1701 and has been restored and extended with wings designed by Laurence King following war damage. The building features brown brick with a stuccoed centerpiece and a slate roof, standing three storeys high with dormers. The original block is five windows wide and includes an advanced and pedimented stucco centerpiece, which is set back between the post-war wings. The entrance is Doric columned and pedimented, featuring a triglyph entablature. Above the entrance are two niches containing painted wooden figures of Charity Children, likely from the early 18th century, flanking the arms of Queen Anne made in Coade stone. The windows have flush framed glazing bar sashes under flat gauged red brick arches with keystones. There is a brick plat band at the first floor, a moulded cornice, and a parapet, with a steep stucco pediment over the centerpiece. The wings, which have flush framed sashes, have been rebuilt in a matching style.
