Barn About 50 Metres South East of Buston Manor

This is a barn located about 50 metres southeast of Buston Manor, dating from the late 14th century and mid 16th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The barn is timber framed and weatherboarded, standing on a stone plinth, and features a plain tile roof. It is oriented north-south and consists of four timber-framed bays from the late 14th century, which originally extended further north. The missing northern bays have been replaced by two mid-16th century bays. There are front and rear aisles to all six bays, with midstreys situated in the second and fifth bays from the south. The roof is hipped, and there are remnants of porches on the east side that rise from the aisle. The west side has low double doors, with the northern door blocked by a granary.

Inside, the late 14th-century section has four pairs of barely-jowled principal posts, with the south gable end rebuilt in the early 20th century. It features curved passing shores and square-section arch braces. The roof over the third bay from the south retains a sans-purlin structure with collared common rafters, while the rest of the southern roof was rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is evidence of reversed assembly in the aisle on the east side. The mid-16th century bays have gunstock jowls on the principal posts, along with curved passing shores and arch braces connecting to the tie-beams and arcade plate. The roof is a clasped purlin type with diminishing principal rafters, windbraces, and vertical queen-struts supporting the collars. Later alterations to the aisle studding include re-used late 16th or early 17th century moulded timber of domestic origin, likely sourced from Buston Manor.
