Description

This barn, now converted into a house, dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 18th, 19th, and late 20th centuries. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, sitting on a stone plinth, and features a plain tile roof. The building is positioned at right angles to the road and consists of three timber-framed bays with front and rear aisles. A full-height central entrance is located on the north side, which has a porch with a hipped roof added in the 18th century. A nearly full-height entrance was inserted to the south in the mid-19th century, and there are lean-tos added to both the right and left sides in the 19th century. The roof is hipped.

Inside, the barn has principal posts with cut jowls, which are arch-braced to tie-beams and arcade plates. The rafters are trenched for lapped collars and have been re-ordered with side purlins in the 18th century, with a ridge piece added later. There are mortices for curved passing shores to the aisles, and trench remains in the tie of the northwest aisle. Most of the wall studding has been replaced, but there is evidence of studs between the nave and south aisle. Grooving is present for infilling at the gable ends of the nave and aisles, and there are scribed carpenter's marks and a stop-splayed edge-halved scarf joint. A covered yard was erected to the south between 1866 and 1898 but was demolished in 1984.
