Description
The Moat is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the early to mid 16th century and restored in the 1960s. It features a timber frame, with the ground floor constructed of red brick in stretcher bond and the first floor tile-hung. The roof is covered with plain tiles and follows a lobby entry plan. The building likely consists of four timber-framed bays, including a bay that originally housed a smoke stack. It is two storeys high and was formerly designed with a continuous jetty, which has been returned to the left side. The roof is hipped, with a gablet on the right side. There is an off-centre brick ridge stack to the left and a truncated projecting brick stack at the right gable end. The windows are irregularly arranged, featuring three three-light casements and tripartite sashes on the ground floor. A panelled door with two top lights is accessed by three steps beneath the stack, and there is an open gabled timber porch. To the left is a rear wing from the 18th or early 19th century, with a ground floor of red brick and a weatherboarded first floor. The interior has only been partly inspected but includes exposed framing, moulded beams and joists, and is said to have a crown post roof. The site was formerly moated.
