Description
This barn, located approximately 4 yards east of Fairbourne Manor, dates from the first half of the 16th century. The ground floor is constructed of very roughly coursed ragstone, while the first floor is tile-hung, topped with a plain tile roof. The barn is two storeys high and features a hipped roof. On the first floor, there are two very small single-light casement windows. The ground floor has double doors at the center, and there is a later lean-to structure on the left side, with stone on the ground floor and weatherboarding above. Additionally, there is an integral lean-to on the left half of the rear elevation, with a stone ground floor and weatherboarding above. This section has boarded double doors that lead up 11 concrete steps parallel to the rear wall, providing access to the first floor.
Inside, the barn is partly weatherboarded and consists of four bays, with a rear aisle that occupies only the left two bays. The first floor is timber-framed, featuring a mid-rail and some arch-bracing on the walls. The principal posts have gunstock jowls, and the aisle posts were formerly supported by passing shores. The structure includes arch-braced, slightly cambered tie-beams, plain crown posts—two of which have two braces to the collar purlin, while one has a curved brace to the tie-beam, one to the front, and one to the rear. One crown post has only one brace to the collar purlin. There is also grooving that suggests the former partitioning of the aisle from the rest of the barn.
