Description

This is a barn located about 70 metres west of Sweetlands Farmhouse, dating from the 16th century or earlier. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, topped with a plain tile roof. The barn consists of four timber-framed bays and is positioned at right angles to the road. The left (south-west) end bay is partitioned from the rest and is likely floored, featuring a hipped roof. There is a single door at the left end and full-height double doors in the third bay from the left. At the rear of this bay, there is a 17th or 18th-century porch with boarded sides, a hipped plain tile roof, and full-height double doors. A later rear lean-to is flush with the porch.

Inside, the barn has shouldered gunstock-jowled principal posts and cambered tie-beams, with ogee arch braces flanking the midstrey. The plain crown-posts have head braces and an irregular arrangement of foot braces. The first truss from the left end features a pegged cross-beam between the principal posts, with a central stud and arch braces pegged between it and the tie-beam, showing signs of infilling. There is a further pegged stud towards the rear, rebated to the floored side for a doorway between it and the rear principal post. The cross-beam is morticed for closely spaced joists of relatively large scantling on the left side, and arch-bracing is present throughout the walls. Part of one wall retains plastered stave, straw, and lath infilling above the midrail, along with evidence of a narrower rear doorway that predates the porch. Sweetlands Farmhouse itself is not listed.
