Description

Brigadoon is a house located on Maidstone Road in Staplehurst, dating back to the 16th century. It is built in two storeys with a facade from the late 18th or early 19th century. The structure is timber framed, with the ground floor covered in weatherboarding and the first floor featuring tile-hanging with diagonal stripes of darker and lighter tiles. The roof is made of plain tiles.

The house consists of two parallel, storeyed timber-framed ranges, each built at right angles to the road and linked by a narrow stack bay. The left (north) range has three timber-framed bays, while the right (south) range has two timber-framed bays. The stack bay is flush with the west ends of both ranges and the rear (east) gable end of the south range.

On the west (front) elevation, the house stands on a rendered plinth and features two storeys. The right (south) range jetties out at the front, with the jetty returning along the right side on a plain dragon post and extending across the stack bay to the left. The jetty of the left range has a slightly higher bressumer compared to the right range. The roof of the left range is gabled at the front and hipped at the rear, with slightly higher eaves and a lower ridge than the infill section. The roof of the right range is hipped at both the front and rear, with the eaves level continuing across the infill section. The roof of the infill section is higher to the left of the stack than to the right. A filleted red and grey brick stack is located towards the centre in the narrow gap between the ranges.

The fenestration is irregular, with two 2-light casements in each range. There is a ribbed door located under the stack. Inside, the house features exposed framing and evidence of a stair position in the north-east corner of the right (south) range. The first floor of this range has gunstock-jowled posts with short braces to the tie-beams, while the left range has a plain crown-post with foot braces. Shutter grooves are present throughout the house, and the first floor of the left range has combed plaster.
