Description

Old Newstead is a farmhouse, now a house, that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with additions and alterations from the early 17th century and late 18th century. The building is timber framed, with the ground floor featuring red and grey brick in Flemish bond and the first floor being tile-hung. The left end bay is also tile-hung on both floors. It has a plain tile roof and an open hall, which may have originally included a one-storey end bay that is now missing, running east to west.

An early 17th-century addition consists of approximately two timber-framed bays extending south from the west end. A late 18th-century single bay addition is located at the south end of the 17th-century section. The east elevation shows that the south wing has two storeys and a garret, while the east wing has two storeys. The south wing has slightly higher eaves and ridge, with a half-hipped roof at the south end. The east wing is gabled and weatherboarded on the east side.

At the rear (west) of the late 18th-century addition, there is a red and grey brick stack in English bond. Additionally, a multiple red and grey brick stack is located on the rear slope of the roof of the 17th-century section, near the junction with the earlier range. The building features irregular fenestration with five windows: two 3-light casements in the south wing, one of which is flanked by 4-light wood mullion windows with diamond subsidiary mullions, and one 2-light casement in the east wing. There is a boarded door towards the centre of the south wing and a lean-to structure at the east gable end of the east wing. A two-storey addition on the north side of the east wing has a rendered ground floor, a tile-hung first floor, a gabled plain-tile roof, and one 3-light casement. The interior has not been inspected. The property was formerly known as Newstead Farm and was once a moated site.
