Description

Farmhouse. Dating from the 14th century, it has undergone later alterations. The farmhouse is timber framed. The ground floor is red brick in Flemish bond, while the first floor is weatherboarded. It has a plain tile roof. Originally, it likely comprised an open hall with a rear aisle, a bay to the left end, and a two-bay cross-wing flush with the right end. The farmhouse has two storeys and attics. The ground floor is continuous. The cross-wing juts out to the front and along the right side. The hall range has a hipped roof to the left, and the wing has a hipped roof with higher eaves, a ridge, and a large gablet. A ridge stack is situated at the junction of the hall and wing, and there are two hipped rear dormers. The fenestration is irregular, with three casement windows on the main range, one being two-light and one being three-light, and one three-light window to the wing. A boarded door is positioned under the stack. A lean-to has been added to the rear of the hall, historically an aisle. The interior features exposed framing. The wing has a moulded octagonal crown post supported by a moulded cambered tie-beam, with large moulded solid-spandrel braces and doubly hollow-chamfered principal posts. The hall roof has been largely reassembled, showing trenches for collars. The hall posts have long cut jowls. A moulded doorway with a depressed ogee head connects the hall range and the wing. There are moulded brackets beneath the ground-floor ceiling beams. Evidence suggests the presence of windows and a possible garderobe in the rear gable end of the wing.
