Description
The Shirley is a 17th-century farmhouse located on Chart Hill in Staplehurst. It features a timber frame construction, with the ground floor finished in painted brick and the first floor displaying exposed framing with rendered infilling. The left gable end is weatherboarded, and the roof is covered with plain tiles. The building has two storeys, with the first floor showcasing close-studded framing and thin scantling studs. There are an ogee tension brace on the left end and a concave tension brace on the left end of the right bay. The facade is divided into two timber-framed bays, with the right bay further subdivided, and a narrow central bay. The roof is steeply pitched, hipped on the left side and half-hipped on the right, featuring gablets. A multiple brick stack is located slightly to the left of center. The windows are irregularly arranged, consisting of two small three-light casements, and there is a boarded door situated under the stack. A lean-to is present on the right side. The interior has not been inspected.
