Description

Canon House and Canon Villa are a pair of houses dating from the 16th century, with possible earlier origins, and were partially refronted around 1830. The buildings are timber framed, featuring exposed close studding with plaster infill, and part of the front is finished with painted brick. They have a plain tiled roof and rise to two storeys with an attic. The design includes a continuous jetty, a hipped roof with gablets, four gabled dormers, and several stacks positioned at the center, center right, and two projecting from the end right.

On the left side, there are three round-headed sash windows on each floor, while the right side features three wooden casements on the first floor and two on the ground floor. A rib and stud door is set in a four-centered arched surround to the center right. The rear courtyard wings are part framed and part painted brick, including strip windows that resemble those of a workshop.

Inside, the roof is supported by four plain crown-posts, with two on the south (left) likely being older than the 16th-century crown-posts on the right. There is also a later framed cross-wing. Historically, this house was probably part of Wingham College and survived a fire in 1660 that destroyed most of the college buildings south of "Canon's Row" on the main road.
