Description
House, now flats, largely dating from the 18th century and 19th century, with possible earlier elements; it has been recently altered externally and remodelled internally. The building is constructed of brick, with some areas slate-hung or rendered and painted white, and has red tile roofs. It follows a U-plan, comprising a rectangular double-depth block with a two-span roof, facing south, a rear wing to the west with several additions to its side, and a set-back wing attached to the east. It is two-and-a-half storeys high, with two-storey wings. The three-bay south front has brickwork below the ground-floor windows and tile-hanging above (the lower section originally used mathematical tiles). It features a symmetrical design with a rebuilt staircase leading to a raised front door, which has a fanlight with radiating glazing bars (previously a pedimented architrave). There are two 16-pane sash windows on each floor, and a 12-pane sash above the door, topped by a hipped roof with two hipped dormers and two chimneys in the rear valley. The left return wall has one window at first floor level, and behind this is a large outshut to the rear wing with a catslide roof and a large, gable-ended, tile-hung dormer. A modern, single-storey addition is present at the south end of the rear wing, which is not of particular interest. The right-hand return wall of the main block has renewed sash windows on each floor. The attached east wing is rendered and painted white with altered or inserted windows. The rear wall of the main block, facing the entrance court, uses similar materials to the front and includes a doorway in the right-hand corner with a tall 18-pane sash window directly above, a large 16-pane sash window at ground floor, and two smaller windows above. Two hipped dormers are also present. The western wing is rendered and painted white, and includes a tripartite sash window at ground floor and a four-light casement window above; the eastern wing has altered openings. The interior was not inspected, but it is believed to contain some remains of timber framing, although none are visible. Group value arises from its connection to the wider Canons Grove.
