Description

Leatherhead Bridge is a public road bridge over the River Mole, likely of later medieval origin, but rebuilt and enlarged in 1782-1783 by George Gwilt, the county surveyor, with the date 1784 inscribed on the south side. The bridge is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with some dressings of Portland stone. It features a long, low structure with 14 segmental arches resting on low piers, which have triangular cutwaters topped with semi-pyramidal dressed stone. Each spandrel contains a roundel, and there is a moulded stone band along the structure. The south side has a high brick parapet with flat stone coping secured by wrought-iron cramps, incorporating four semicircular refuges. A stone plaque on the outer side of the bridge is inscribed with "BUILT 1784". The original lighting has been replaced with reproduction Windsor lighting, and the parapets were rebuilt in 1988.
