Description

A house, likely dating from the 17th century or earlier, has been extended to the rear and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is probably timber-framed, though now rendered with some flint visible. The original part of the building has a single-depth, two-bay plan, with later extensions to the rear.

The building is two-and-a-half storeys high and two bays wide. The ground floor has been altered with the insertion of shop fronts. The shop front to the left (No. 39) is modern, with a doorway to the right. The shop front to the right (No. 41) is probably from the early 19th century, with a central doorway and large windows featuring margin panes. The upper floor is jettied, and the oversail has seemingly been altered by the shop fronts below. Canted bay windows are present in each portion, with the right-hand bay (No. 41) retaining sash windows with glazing bars, while the left-hand bay (No. 39) has been altered with a casement window. A dentilled cornice runs along the eaves, surrounding the tops of the windows.

The steeply-pitched half-hipped roof has two small hipped dormers, each containing a two-light casement, and a chimney stack on the central ridge. Two-stage additions to the rear are not of particular architectural interest. The building possesses group value.
