Description

Two houses at 1 and 3 Church Street date to the 17th and 18th centuries, and have been significantly altered, now forming a single shop. Number 1 is of brick construction, while number 3 is timber-framed with brick infilling and cladding, mostly painted white. Both have red tile roofs. The houses have a single-depth, linear plan, with modern additions to the rear that are not of special interest. They are two storeys high, with 3 and 4 first-floor windows respectively. The ground floor of both houses has been replaced with a modern shop front. On the first floor, number 1 features 3 closely spaced segmental-headed windows; a blind window is flanked by 2-light casements. Number 3 has a horizontal sliding sash window at the left end, and three square sash windows with wide margin panes and exposed boxes. Number 1, which sits slightly lower than number 3, has a roof with dentilled eaves and a hip at the left end. Number 3 has a steeply-pitched roof. The right-hand gable wall has an external chimney stack. To the rear, some exposed timber framing is visible, which includes the sill, mid-rail, studs and one brace (all of light scantling), and the gable is tile-hung. Internally, number 3 retains remains of the timber-framed former rear wall at ground floor, and wall plates and some other timbers at first floor. A former inglenook fireplace is said to survive behind modern shop fittings. Group value reflects the significance of this building as a historic landmark within Leatherhead.
