Description

A farmhouse, now comprising three shops with offices above, likely dates to the late medieval or 16th century, and has undergone considerable alteration and remodelling. The building is constructed of red brick, with the front rendered and part of the right-hand side weatherboarded. Some original timber framing remains visible internally. It has a red tile roof and brick chimneys. The building follows an L-shaped plan, with a three-unit front range running parallel to the High Street and a rear wing on the right-hand side. It has two low storeys with three windows on the first floor. The ground floor now incorporates three modern shop fronts, which are not of particular interest. The first floor has twelve-pane sash windows, with the second and third windows being widely spaced. A hipped roof includes a chimney stack on the slope between the first and second bays. The right-hand return wall, weatherboarded at first floor, features a segmental-headed twelve-pane sash window near the rear corner, and two other sash windows above. A former cottage at the rear of the wing is not considered part of the listed building. Inside, the first-floor room of No. 41 retains exposed remnants of the cross-frame of a previously lower timber-framed building. This includes the rear end of a tie-beam, a principal rafter stub, an arch-brace from the wallpost with wattle-and-daub in the spandrel, and three sides of fielded wall panelling.
