Description

The Duke's Head Public House is an inn that dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, with remodels in the 19th century and alterations in the 20th century. It features a timber frame with brick cladding and a stucco facade, topped by a red tile roof. The building has a single-depth front range with rear wings of unequal length and stands two storeys high with three bays.

The nearly symmetrical 19th-century facade includes painted quoins and a high banded parapet. The principal doorway, which is slightly offset to the right, has a shouldered surround made of plain render and is sheltered by a flat canopy that extends across the first floor, connecting two full-height canted bays. Above the canopy, there is a twelve-pane sashed window with an exposed box and plaster cresting that reads "DUKES HEAD" beneath a roundel depicting the duke's head. The flanking bays contain four-pane sashes, except for the ground floor on the right side, where a doorway has replaced the window.

An extruded chimney stack is located at the right-hand gable, and there is a single chimney at the front left corner. At the right-hand end of the building, there is a modern single-storey flat-roofed addition that is not of special interest. The rear slope of the roof descends to a lower level of the rear wing, which has various openings on one side and is mostly covered by a modern addition on the other side, though some exposed timber framing is visible above this.

The interior has been altered on the ground floor with partition walls removed, but some remnants of timber framing can still be seen; otherwise, the interior was not inspected.
