Description

The War Memorial, built in 1921, is located on North Street in Leatherhead. It is constructed from red brick and flint, with stone dressings and a red tile roof. The memorial features a cross made of Portland stone and is enclosed by brick boundary walls topped with iron railings.

The structure is designed as a long rectangular shelter that overlooks a terraced garden divided into two parts: an upper rectangular section with a central cross and a lower triangular section. The shelter is in the style of the 17th century, single-storey, and consists of 11 bays of open arcading that are symmetrical. The central bay is wider and has a slightly projecting porch, which includes brick pilasters with imposts, a basket-arch made of brick voussoirs and a keystone, flint spandrels, and a Dutch gable featuring a lettered stone tablet. The flanking arcades are composed of round-headed arches on brick piers with imposts, brick voussoirs with keystones, and flint spandrels. The ends of the shelter have basket arches with keystones, and the monopitched roof is finished with copings in Dutch gable style.

Inside, the rear wall displays a large inscribed tablet at the center, while the other bays contain round-headed blind windows filled with stone tablets that commemorate the individuals who fell in the First World War. An additional tablet below the central one lists those who served in the Second World War. A flight of steps descends from the porch to a paved area of the garden, which features a tall chamfered cross with an inverted sword on its face and an octagonal base. The garden is enclosed by low walls with stone copings, square brick piers, and iron railings. The main gateway on the west side is marked by taller piers topped with ball finials.
