Description
A pair of cottages dated 1799, located on Gravel Hill in Leatherhead. The cottages are constructed of knapped flint with red brick quoins and dressings, and have a red tile roof. They are arranged with a double-depth plan, each cottage being single-fronted. They are two storeys high with a very high basement, and have a symmetrical facade with segmental-headed raised doorways in the outer bays, approached by flights of seven steps protected by simple bar railings. The lower part of the basement wall is rendered and painted white, and includes two small windows with altered glazing; the upper part has two small horizontally inserted windows. The ground floor has two segmental-headed 12-pane sash windows with brick surrounds, matching windows are located on the first floor above. There are blind windows in the outer bays of the first floor, and a circular panel in the centre containing the inscription "1799", all set within brick surrounds. The roof is half-hipped with projecting eaves and a central chimney stack. The left return wall has a small attic window in the gable. The right-hand return wall has a blocked segmental-headed basement opening, blocked or blind windows on each floor, and a two-light attic window in the gable, although it is largely concealed by an adjoining building. The rear of the property features a full-height weather-boarded extension. The interior was not inspected.
